Defining the OKR Champion Role

OKR champions operate in tandem with other of roles that collectively drive the success of an organization’s OKR adoption. There are 4 important roles that you need to have in your team for a successful OKR implementation.

OKR Lead

OKR Lead is the person responsible for the overall OKR Deployment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the implementation, training, communication planning and execution of OKRs
  • Drive OKR implementation like a program and engage with stakeholders accordingly

OKR Leads are often working at the company or business unit level as Head of Transformation, Strategy, or Program Director (Could be the CEO/CXO in small organizations).

OKR Champions

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the OKR definition workshops, check-ins and retrospectives
  • Participate in the interal OKR community

OKR Champions & OKR Leads work closely to ensure that strategy & execution are evolving hand-in-hand.
OKR Champions dedicate 5 to 10% of their time to OKRs. They need to show discipline and interpersonal skills to mediate conversations and uncover insights. OKR Champions can be internal or external.

Team Members

Team Members are the people who actually make things happen!

Key Responsibilities

  • Define Quarterly Team OKRs based on company OKR, strategy and team priorities.
  • Provide inputs and participate to OKR Check-ins and retrospectives.
  • Some Team Members might be identified as leader of a Key Result, coordinating its execution.

Nobody knows the ground realities better than team members. They play the biggest role in the success of any company, and OKR is the tool that allows leaders to empower team members.

Team Leaders

Team Leaders connect company OKRs to team priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help articulate company OKRs and explain strategic priorities to the teams.
  • Make OKRs a key day-to-day element in dialogues on priorities & planning.
  • Instill change, slowly but consistently.

Managers take up the role of Team Leaders. They empower both team members and OKR champions to do what they do best by acting as a cohesive, aligning force.
